🍂 Can’t-Miss Fall Favorite Hikes Around Bend, Oregon

Central Oregon is a hiker’s paradise year-round, but there’s something extra magical about hitting the trails in the fall. Crisp mornings, golden larch trees, colorful foliage, and fewer crowds make this season ideal for exploring the stunning landscapes surrounding Bend. Whether you're looking for dramatic canyon views or a peaceful walk by the river, these five favorite fall hikes are sure to inspire your autumn adventures.

1. Smith Rock State Park – Misery Ridge Loop

Fall is the perfect time to explore the iconic cliffs of Smith Rock. The cooler weather makes the steep climb up Misery Ridge a little more bearable, and the panoramic views of the Crooked River below are unbeatable with the changing leaves.

  • Length: ~3.8 miles loop
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • What to Love in Fall: Stunning golden hues against the red rocks, fewer climbers and hikers than peak summer.

📍 Tip: Start early to catch the morning light on the rocks and bring plenty of water—this trail still gets warm, even in fall!

2. Tumalo Falls Trail

Tumalo Falls is a year-round showstopper, but in the fall, it feels especially peaceful. The 97-foot waterfall is just the start—continue hiking upstream for more cascades and colorful forest scenery.

  • Length: Up to 7 miles out-and-back (you can shorten this easily)
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • What to Love in Fall: Brilliant yellow and orange leaves lining the creek, light mist from the falls, and cool hiking temps.

📍 Tip: The road to the trailhead typically remains open until heavy snowfall—check before you go!

3. Metolius River Trail – Near Camp Sherman

This serene trail follows the spring-fed Metolius River as it winds through dense pine forest and past charming cabins. In fall, the cottonwoods and aspens put on a golden show, making this one of the most peaceful and picturesque hikes in the region.

  • Length: Up to 12 miles out-and-back (choose your section!)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • What to Love in Fall: Tranquil atmosphere, bright yellow leaves, and the sound of rushing water the whole way.

📍 Tip: Stop by the Camp Sherman Store for coffee or a treat and watch for spawning kokanee salmon in the river!

4. Deschutes River Trail – From Farewell Bend to Benham Falls

Right in the heart of Bend, this classic trail is a local favorite for good reason. The river rushes by in full force during fall, and the trees along the bank glow with warm colors. This hike is great for families, dogs, or anyone wanting a scenic stroll close to town.

  • Length: 6.8 miles round trip to Benham Falls
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • What to Love in Fall: Vibrant foliage, easy access, great spots for photos and picnics.

📍 Tip: This trail is bike-friendly, so share the path with care. Sunset walks here are especially beautiful in fall.

5. Paulina Creek Falls & Trail – Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Paulina Falls drops dramatically into a rocky canyon and is one of the most underrated fall hikes in Central Oregon. Continue along the creek trail to enjoy views of lava flows, forested ridges, and smaller waterfalls.

  • Length: 6.1 miles out-and-back
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • What to Love in Fall: Crisp mountain air, volcanic landscapes, fewer visitors, and peaceful forest scenery.

📍 Tip: Grab a day pass at the entrance to the monument and be prepared for chillier temps up at elevation.
