A Cozy Family Friendly Winter Weekend in Sunriver Built Around Good Food, Quality Time, and Outdoor Adventure

Sunriver, Oregon is the perfect home base for a relaxing winter getaway. From nearby Mt. Bachelor to closer-to-home restaurants and attractions, Sunriver has everything you need for a fun and enjoyable family friendly winter weekend.

Why Sunriver For A Family Friendly Winter Getaway

Sunriver is built around vacationing families. It's safe, scenic, and no matter what season you visit there are plenty of activities for all ages. Although Sunriver is more popular in summer, winter is an incredible time to plan a getaway with your family. When you visit in winter, you'll enjoy:

Fewer Crowds

This means lower wait times at restaurants, more peaceful trails, and an easier time planning a last minute getaway. Slower season also means the potential for more lodging specials, so you can save on your stay when you visit in winter.

Winter Wonderland

When there is snow on the ground, Sunriver and the surrounding areas are transformed into a magical, snowy wonderland. Family members of all abilities and ages can enjoy the snow, whether it's enjoying the view next to the fireplace at your Sunriver vacation rental, out on a snowmobile, or on the slopes.

Cozy Vacation Rentals

Sunriver has many incredible vacation rentals to enjoy. Many really shine in winter with grand fireplaces for cozy evenings, hot tubs to relax after a day of adventure, game rooms when you don't want to head out, and peaceful forest surroundings to help you truly unwind.

Proximity

As a small community nestled on the edge of the Deschutes National Forest, all of the activities: snow adventures, restaurants, shopping, museums, are within a few minutes of each other. This means less time driving (particularly beneficial in winter) and more time enjoying.

Here's how we recommend taking advantage of these benefits on a family friendly winter weekend in Sunriver.

Friday: Settle In & Ease Into the Weekend

3 pm | Arrive in Sunriver

Head to the Village at Sunriver Resort to explore the shops, grab a treat, and stretch your legs.

5 pm | Check In

Check in to your vacation rental, unpack, freshen up, and head to Sunriver Brewing Co for a laid-back family dinner.

7 pm | Wind down

Back at the house, slip into your suit and kick off your weekend with a relaxing soak in the hot tub, followed by a movie by the fire.

Saturday: Snow Day

8 am | Breakfast + Gear Prep

Make a big breakfast at home, pack your snow gear and plenty of snacks before heading up to the mountain.

9:30 am | Head to Mount Bachelor ⛰️

Whether you're a skiing/snowboarding family or just looking for some fun in the snow, Mt Bachelor has a wide variety of winter activities to enjoy. Beyond downhill skiing and snowboarding, you can try dog sledding, snowshoeing (bring your own snowshoes), or cross country ski. Whichever activity you plan to do, we recommend booking ahead so you can get started on snow-filled fun as soon as you arrive.

You can make this day as long or as short as you'd like by packing your own lunch or enjoying one of the many dining options Mt. Bachelor has to offer.

1 pm | Lunch and Hot Cocoa

Either call it a day and head back to Sunriver for lunch and a cup of hot cocoa to warm you up, or take a few minutes to refuel and get back out there!

2:30 pm | Mid-Day Reset

Head back to the rental to warm up with a soak in the hot tub or enjoy games and snacks by the fire. Resting and decompressing between activities is the key to a successful family-friendly winter weekend in Sunriver.

4:30 pm | Ice Skating

If you're up for it, head to The Village for family ice skating. They offer rentals and skate assist devices for children 12 and under. Tall socks and gloves recommended.

Saturday Evening | Cook In & Wind Down

Head back to the house and lean into a relaxed night at your Sunriver Vacation Rental. Cook something simple, or grab food to-go, and enjoy a cozy dinner at home.

Sunday: Brunch & Sunriver Nature Center on Your Way Out

10-11 am | Check out & head to brunch

On your way out of town, head to Cafe Sintra for coffee & brunch.

12:00 pm | Sunriver Nature Center
