🍁 Best Places to See Fall Colors in Central Oregon

There’s a special kind of magic in Central Oregon when the days grow crisp, the air smells like pine, and the leaves turn shades of gold, orange, and red. Fall is short but spectacular here—and knowing where (and when) to go leaf-peeping makes all the difference.

Whether you’re strolling along a river, hiking in the high desert, or exploring right in Bend, these are our top spots to experience the season’s colors—and the best time to catch them at their peak.

1. Metolius River – Camp Sherman

If you’ve never walked the banks of the Metolius River in autumn, you’re missing out. This crystal-clear, spring-fed river winds through tall pines, golden cottonwoods, and quaking aspens. The contrast of turquoise water against yellow foliage is breathtaking. In the same area, you can also get to the Metolius Preserve, which is a beautiful spot for fall hiking, and leaf peeping! Watch for larch trees and vine maples!

When to Go: Late September to mid-October.
Pro Tip: Park near the Camp Sherman Store, grab a warm drink, and stroll along the river trail. Keep an eye out for kokanee salmon in their bright red spawning colors.

2. Shevlin Park – Bend

Shevlin Park is a local favorite for fall color, especially along the Aspen Grove Trail. The golden aspens light up against the evergreens, and the park’s easy trails make it perfect for a family walk or picnic.

When to Go: Early to mid-October.
Pro Tip: Go in the morning for soft light on the leaves, then head into Bend for coffee and pastries.

3. Drake Park – Downtown Bend

For an easy, in-town leaf-peeping spot, Drake Park delivers. The Deschutes River reflects the red maples and yellow willows, and the park’s pathways make for a scenic stroll without leaving downtown.

When to Go: Early October.
Pro Tip: Pair your walk with lunch or happy hour at one of the nearby restaurants, or hit The Bodega Market and have a picnic in the park.

4. Paulina Lake & East Lake – Newberry National Volcanic Monument

In the fall, the drive up to Paulina Lake is lined with glowing aspens and golden grasses. The lakes themselves are ringed with color, and the cooler temps mean fewer crowds.

When to Go: Late September to early October.
Pro Tip: Stop at Paulina Falls on your way up for a stunning autumn waterfall view. This can be an easy 1/2 mile walk or you can make the day of it and start at 10- mile snow-park.

5. Sisters & McKenzie Pass

The charming town of Sisters bursts with fall color along its streets and surrounding trails. If McKenzie Pass is still open, the drive offers panoramic views of mountain peaks framed by autumn foliage.

When to Go: Late September to early October.
Pro Tip: Spend the morning exploring Sisters shops, then take the scenic drive for afternoon light, better yet don't forget to hit Dee Wright Observatory.
