Whether you’ve booked your vacation rental in Sunriver or you are staying in one of our vacation rentals in Eagle Crest, there is sure to be a course or three nearby. Top golf courses in Central Oregon include Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Tetherow in Bend, and the courses at Pronghorn Golf Club in Bend. Popular public courses include Aspen Lakes and Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow at Black Butte Ranch. Eagle Crest Resort also offers a great mix of courses for all skill levels.

Summit The Cascades

Hiking is a year round activity in Central Oregon, but summer is the best time for any higher altitude hiking including summits like South Sister, Middle Sister, Mt Bachelor, or a trek to No Name Lake near the summit of Broken Top. Summit hikes are strenuous and contain significant elevation gain, so be sure you are prepared before heading out. For mountain summits with a little less intensity, try Black Butte near Sisters, Tumalo Mountain, or Paulina Peak near La Pine.

Enjoy Stargazing

Central Oregon is home to several Dark Sky Communities, including both Sisters and Sunriver. Pair that with summer’s particularly cloudless nights, and you’ve got the perfect setup for incredible stargazing. You can take in the night sky and learn about what you are viewing at Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory, Pine Mountain Observatory, and the Hopservatory at Worthy Brewing for something a little more unique.

Experience Volcanic Landscapes

Volcanic activity shaped Central Oregon’s unique terrain and this history is on display across the region. However, for more unique encounters with volcanic landscapes there is no better time than summer to explore. The Newberry National Volcanic Mounument is one of the best places to learn about and view the area’s volcanic history, whether it’s on the lava river trail, on the Big Obsidian Flow, or in the lava river cave. You can also find otherworldly volcanic landscapes near Sisters at the Dee Wright Observatory.

Dine At A Food Cart Lot

While Central Oregon’s food cart lots are open year-round, summer is one of the most ideal times to enjoy a meal from one of the area’s many food cart lots. In summer, many of the food cart lots also have live music to enjoy. Try a few of our local favorites like the The Barn in Sisters, The Bite in Tumalo, Century Commons in Sunriver, or Podski or Dogwood at the Pine Shed in Bend. Note that trucks often change location, so be sure to check the website for the latest before you go.

Go Fly Fishing

Central Oregon has some of the best fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest. From flowing rivers filled with redband trout and steelhead to clear lakes filled with kokanee salmon and rainbow trout, you’ll find ample opportunities for casting. Top river locations include the Deschutes, Fall River, Metolius, and Crooked River. In summer,  lakes, like Hosmer Lake and Sparks Lake become accessible and open up greater opportunities to cast your line.

Great spot. Quite clean neighborhood. Home has two private comfortable bead rooms for the adults, and a kids loft room with 4 beds for kids. 3 bathrooms are a life saver when staying with multiple girls. Made use of the bbq at night, and the gas fire pit in the morning. While enjoying coffee by the fire pit in the morning on the back porch to our enjoyment watched a doe and her two fauns playing in the field. The kids absolutely loved the pool and splash pad. While the adults soaked our old bones in the hot tub. My wife and daughter made use of the bikes and took a leisure ride through the neighborhood. House is roomy with several areas to sit and relax. Big family table seats 8 where we all could come together and enjoy a family dinner. Absolutely loved our stay at the Bunkhouse Getaway.

Things To Know Before Visiting Central Oregon In The Summer

Summer is one of the best seasons to experience Central Oregon. Whether you are visiting for the spectacular mountain hikes, unique volcanic scenery, relaxing river floats, stunning golf courses, or something else, these are a few key considerations to keep in mind as you plan your summer trip.

Summer Is Peak Season In Central Oregon

Because summer is peak season in Central Oregon, it's important to plan ahead to get the most out of your trip. Accommodations, tours, and rentals are often sold out, so you'll want to reserve early to secure your spot. If you plan to do any hiking during your trip, know that many of the trails in the Deschutes National Forest require a day-use permit from June 15 to October 15. To secure a permit, you'll need to reserve via recreation.gov. Permits are released in two windows, one day in advance and ten days in advance. Most day-use permits go quickly so be sure to plan ahead to have multiple chances to secure the permits you'd like.

While you won't run out of restaurant and brewery options while you are here, if there is a particular restaurant you know you want to try, be sure to reserve in advance. As with other destinations, this is particularly important if you'd like to eat at a popular time or you have a larger group. Also know that the busy season does mean longer waits when you don't have a reservation or are visiting at peak hours. Eating at less popular times can help you avoid longer wait times.

As with any popular travel destination, peak season also means trails are more crowded, the river is busier, and parking is a little harder to find. Starting your days a little earlier or choosing less popular locations, trails, and activities can help you avoid some of the congestion.

Summer Days Are Warm, Nights Are Cool

Summer in Central Oregon can be hot! Temperatures are often in the high 80s and low 90s. Combined with the summer sun and higher altitude, it can often feel even hotter. Be sure to plan accordingly and wear sunscreen and protective clothing. The hot summer sun is another reason to get your day started earlier for more enjoyable temperatures if you are golfing, mountain biking, or hiking.

Although summer days are hot, summer nights are cool. As soon as the sun goes down, temperatures really begin to cool down. It's not uncommon to have summer daytime temperatures in the 90s and nighttime lows in the 50s (or even 40s!). It's important to pack layers so you can enjoy the day no matter what time it is.

Outdoor Lifestyle Is In Full Effect

Summer is one of the seasons with the nicest weather in Central Oregon. This means you'll experience the outdoor lifestyle in full swing. This means restaurants and bars that keep windows and doors open all day for an indoor/outdoor experience (even when the weather is hot!). It means more bikers on the roads, tubers on the river, and people soaking in every type of outdoor activity the area has to offer - locals and visitors alike!

This is another reason to make your summer travel plans in advance and consider taking advantage of off-hours. It's also another reason to pack layers and be prepared for temperature change during any activity, from summiting South Sister to enjoying a craft beer at sunset.

Attire Is Casual

Because so many in Central Oregon are here for outdoor recreation, the attire - no matter what time of day - matches that vibe. You won't need to pack anything fancy unless you want to. Whether you are out on the trail, at an outdoor concert, or at a sit-down restaurant, you'll likely see people wearing the same trail attire.

There is very little rain in summer, making it one of the best seasons to enjoy the area's amazing outdoor activities.

Higher altitude areas in the Cascades see cooler temperatures (although it can still be hot!) and alpine weather can change quickly from sunny to storming and right back again. Pack layers for your trip to be prepared.

Redmond Municipal Airport in Redmond, Oregon, is Central Oregon's main airport. The airport has direct flights from many West Coast destinations as well as cities like Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Denver.
