Summer sneaks up quickly here in Central Oregon — one day it’s spring snow, and the next we’re dusting off the trail shoes and paddling the river. Early summer in Central Oregon, June through early July, is one of the most magical times to hit the trails: the wildflowers are popping, the waterfalls are roaring, and the crowds haven’t quite caught on yet.

These are our top picks for early summer hikes in Central Oregon where you can enjoy all this beautiful season has to offer.

Why Early Summer Hiking In Central Oregon Is Special

Early summer hikes in Central Oregon are truly incredible. The snow is melting or has freshly melted on many area hiking trails, but higher elevation trails are still quiet and cool. In early summer waterfalls are still at their peak flow and wildflowers are also reaching their peak.

Another benefit of early summer hikes in Central Oregon is that their are fewer crowds early on, particularly in June, than there are in July and August making for a more peaceful hiking experience.

Our Favorite Early Summer Hikes in Central Oregon

Smith Rock State Park (Terrebonne)

Distance: Varies (2–7+ miles)

Smith Rock State Park offers views of breathtaking rock formations, the sparkling Crooked River, golden eagles, and classic Central Oregon desert beauty. Early summer is a great time for a hike at Smith Rock before peak summer heat makes these unshaded trails too hot to enjoy.

Local Tip: Try the River Trail for a more moderate stroll, or hike Misery Ridge if you're up for a challenge and want summit views.

Metolius River Trail (Camp Sherman)

Distance: Up to 12 miles round-trip (choose your section)

The Metolius River Trail offers a stunning, emerald green spring-fed river, old-growth ponderosa, and peaceful wildlife viewing. Proximity to the river and a mostly shaded trail make this a great choice for an early summer hike in Central Oregon.

Local Tip: Start at Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery and head downstream. This section is flat, shaded, and perfect on a hot early summer day.

Alder Springs Trail (Crooked River)

Distance: 6 miles out-and-back

The Alder Springs Trail near Crooked River offers Juniper canyon views, spring crossings, and a hidden oasis where Whychus Creek meets the Deschutes River.

Local Tip: You'll need sturdy shoes for a creek crossing — water levels can be knee-high in early summer.

Chimney Rock (Prineville)

Distance: 2.6 miles round-trip

Chimney Rock offers quiet desert beauty with panoramic views of the Crooked River Canyon.

Local Tip: Go early in the day — there’s little shade, and summer sun hits hard out here.

Tumalo Falls to Bridge Creek (Bend)

Distance: 3–6 miles

Tumalo Falls is a Central Oregon icon and one of the best ways to see it is on an early summer hike. You’ll experience iconic waterfall views, shaded forest trails, and snowmelt-fed creeks making this one of the best early summer hikes in Central Oregon.

Local Tip: Get there early or go midweek — this is a favorite for good reason, and parking fills up fast.

Bringing the kids or your dog along for an early summer hike in Central Oregon?

Best kid-friendly early summer hike: Shevlin Park Loop or the Lava Lands Trail. Both offer easy terrain and plenty of nature to explore. Choose Shevlin on a hotter day for more shade and water access. Try Lava Lands early morning or on a cooler early summer day. This trail has no shade, and it can get quite warm.

Dog-friendly trails: Most hiking trails in Central Oregon are dog-friendly; however, many require your pets to be on a leash. Don’t forget to pack water and watch out for hot rocks and sharp lava!

Tips For Early Summer Hikes In Central Oregon

Use these tips to stay safe and make the most of your early summer hike in Central Oregon.

  • Pack out what you pack in. Practice leave no trace.
  • Bring bug spray. Early summer is still prime time for mosquitoes particularly on trails near water sources.
  • Be sun smart. Even with cooler temps, the high desert sun is intense. Sunscreen and hats are a must for early summer hikes in Central Oregon.
  • Check snow levels. If you're heading out to a trail above 6,000 ft, like Tam McArthur Rim or South Sister, the trail may still be snow-covered in June and even into July.
  • Stay on the trail. Protect delicate plant life and avoid getting lost.
  • Download maps in advance. Cell service can be spotty or non-existent on many trails in Central Oregon.
  • Check permitting requirements. Many popular area trails require a permit, which must be purchased in advance, starting June 15th and going through October 15th. Permits have limited availability. Check recreation.gov for permit requirements and to secure permits.

Whether you're chasing waterfalls, birdwatching by the river, or hiking into the high desert, early summer in Central Oregon is full of quiet moments, bright blooms, and wide-open views. An early summer hike in Central Oregon is the perfect way to enjoy the area’s natural splendor. Lace up your boots, grab your camera, and don’t forget to stop and breathe it all in.
